Barring any last minute hitches, autogas dispensing will commence in Nigeria effective from September 2020.
According to the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, a number of fuel outlets across the country will begin to dispense autogas into vehicles before the end of September.
In a statement over the weekend, the ministry stated that the autogas to be dispensed into automobiles are liquefied petroleum gas, compressed natural gas amongst others.
To ensure smooth implementation of this initiative, the Committee on National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP) had been mandated to take all necessary steps to make sure it happens as scheduled.
The NGEP, according to the statement, is also expected to promote gas as a replacement for fuel, a move that would curb the quantum of foreign exchange the country currently spends on imported fuels.
It also said that it is an initiative geared towards providing alternatives to petrol, diesel and kerosene.
It further maintained that selected filling stations across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja had been notified in terms of the initiative.
It stated that arrangements to collocate autogas dispensing facilities at the fuel outlets had reached advanced stages.
Part of the statement read: “consequently, plans have reached advanced stage in line with ministerial directive and support for the development of LPG, CNG and LNG collocation in National Nigeria Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)-owned and operated mega stations in the 36 states and the FCT.
“Under this arrangement, retail outlets will offer a full complement of gas products as transportation fuels in addition to existing white products as cheaper, cleaner and more environmentally friendly alternatives.”
