Former Shell boss, Mutiu Sunmonu, resigns from the board of Unilever Nigeria Plc

Unilever Nigeria Plc has announced the resignation of Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu as an Independent Non-Executive Director with effect from 18th April 2024.

The company made this known in a corporate filing with the Nigerian Exchange Limited signed by Afolasade Olowe (MRS), Senior Counsel and Company Secretary, and titled ‘UNILEVER NIGERIA PLC – NOTIFICATION OF RESIGNATION OF A DIRECTOR.”

“This is to notify the Nigerian Exchange Limited and investing public that the Board of Directors of Unilever Nigeria PLC (Unilever or the Company) has considered and accepted the resignation of Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu CON, as an Independent Non-Executive Director with effect from 18th April 2024,” the statement read.

While thanking Mr. Sunmonu for his valued contributions since his appointment in December 2015, the company said his replacement on the Board will be announced in due course.

Mutiu Sunmonu graduated from the University of Lagos in 1977 with a first-class degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. He joined Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) in August 1978 and served in various capacities in Nigeria, UK, and the Netherlands.

He had worked in various positions in the Shell Petroleum Development Company, where he rose to the position of Managing Director, and subsequently Country Chairman, Shell Companies in Nigeria, positions he held till February 28, 2015.

He was also conferred with the National Honour of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

He is the Chairman of the board of directors of San Leon Energy (UK) Plc, Imperial Homes Mortgage Bank, Alpha Mead Group, Coronation Insurance Plc., and Julius Berger Investments Limited. He was appointed to the Board of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc in 2015 and became Chairman of the Board on April 1, 2016.

It would be recalled that Unilever Nigeria Plc had in January announced the appointment of Mr. Michael Ikpoki as Interim Chairman of the Board pending the appointment of a substantive Chairman.

Mr. Ikpoki, a former CEO of MTN Nigeria, replaced His Majesty, Nnaemeka A. Achebe, Obi of Onitsha, who retired from the Board effective 31st December 2023.
